A charming white kitchen with pops of color and unique details captures the vibrant personalities and eclectic tastes of the home’s owners. Because the family loves to entertain, the space includes a statement bar with cabinets painted in high-gloss black, accented with mesh inserts and fastened with polished brass crémone bolts in the traditional French style. The bar offers handsome storage for sparkling barware and a convenient place to mix a cocktail.
Like the furniture-effect bar, the pairing of black and brass appears again in our selection of the range hood, a vivid counterpoint to the kitchen’s white inset cabinetry. To expand the palette, we chose a soft, understated blue for the wood base of the marble-topped island and a floral print fabric in blue for cushions at the banquette just off the kitchen.
Prior to remodel, the kitchen felt crowded. To make the most of available space, we elongated the kitchen island and created a ‘dining table’ at one end by removing base cabinets and adding counter-height stools. We tucked a pantry under the stairs to the upper floor, concealed by cabinetry doors that open to reveal extra storage. A television is also incorporated into the kitchen’s design, positioned to be visible from any spot in the kitchen—seated at the island or the banquette, or at work at the range or countertop.
