Lay Road Kitchen
We knew that transforming this 1970’s kitchen would be a complex process, as the space was bisected by a peninsula that acts as an extension of the kitchen wall cabinets. To begin, major plumbing stacks had to be relocated. We were then able to place fridge and freezer columns under a soffit wall, tucked between pantry cabinets—creating a unified built-in wall that masks the unsightly soffit. These changes also allowed us to build a sizeable island and to move the range to the back wall to create a functional work area ideal for a cooking enthusiast.
A striking element of redesign, the range is crowned with a five-foot, barrel-shaped weathered zinc hood with a polished brass strap at the base and polished nickel vertical strapping. The stovetop rests on a base that evokes a classic French range, but is in fact, a cabinet with high-gloss blue doors and metal strapping. Lower cabinets at the range wall are equipped with practical, pull-out drawers. The kitchen also incorporates a bar designed to echo the range base cabinet with 100-sheen, high-gloss paint. Bar cabinets are fitted with polished brass hardware and crémone bolts that fasten arched glass-front doors. Quartzite countertops with blue veining repeat the blue of the cabinetry paint finish.
